Privacy Policy

AlifPal ("we", "us") makes the AlifPal mobile app, a tool for learning Arabic. This policy explains what information the app collects, why, and how you can control or delete it.

Information we collect

• Account information. Your email address, and, if you sign in with Google or Apple, the name and profile photo those providers share with us. This is used to create and secure your account.
• Your public profile. Your display name, @handle, an optional bio, and an optional profile picture you choose from your photo library. Other AlifPal users can see these, along with your follower and following counts and your activity calendar (the days you used the app).
• Posts and interactions. The "Learned" logs you share, which other users can see; the reactions you give; the people you follow; and the people you block. Blocks are never shown to the person you block.
• Usage for your streak. How much time you spend in the app each day, stored as a daily total so we can calculate your streak.
• Onboarding answers. What you told us when you set up the app (why you are learning, your level, your daily goal, and how you heard about us). These are private to your account.
• Feedback and reports. Messages you send through "Report a bug or send feedback", and reports you send about a post or a user with the Report button (which include a copy of the reported post or profile), each with your app version and device platform. Also any report you email us.
• Push notification token. A device token used to tell you when new lessons open, if you turn notifications on. You can turn them off in your device settings at any time.
• Trying lessons before you sign up. If you start the first lessons without an account, the app signs you in with an anonymous account that holds no name, email or other personal information. If you then create an account, that anonymous account becomes it.
• Usage analytics. Which screens you open and what you do in lessons and exercises (for example, whether you listened to a lesson to the end or got a question right), sent to Google Analytics for Firebase with a random app id and your account id, so we can see where the app is confusing and improve it. Google derives an approximate location (such as your country or city) from your IP address for these reports. Never your name, email, posts or what you type. Analytics is never used for advertising, and the app never collects your device's advertising id.
• Diagnostic data. If the app crashes or hits an error, we automatically collect a crash report (stack trace, device model, OS version) and, for a small sample of sessions, performance timings, through Sentry, so we can fix bugs. This is not linked to your identity.
• App integrity data. Apple App Attest and Google Play Integrity signals (via Firebase App Check), used only to verify that requests come from a genuine copy of the app, not to identify you.

Information that stays on your phone

• Microphone recordings. The speaking exercises ask for microphone access so you can record yourself saying a line and play it back next to the lesson audio. These recordings stay on your phone and are never uploaded to us or anyone else. You can turn microphone access off in your device settings.
• Lesson progress and exercise answers. Saved on your device so the app can resume where you left off. What you answer stays on your phone; usage analytics (above) only records whether an answer was right.

We do not collect your precise location or your contacts.

How we use your information

Only to run the app: creating and securing your account, showing your profile and posts to other learners, keeping your streak, sending the notifications you opt into, answering your feedback and reports, keeping the community safe, fixing crashes, and understanding how the app is used so we can make it better. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising or tracking.

Keeping the community safe

Posts, names, bios, and handles are checked against a list of offensive words before they are published. You can report any post or user from the app, and block anyone so their posts no longer appear for you. We review reports and act on them as described in our Terms of Service.

Who we share it with

We use the following service providers to run the app. They process data on our behalf and only for these purposes:

• Google Firebase and Google Cloud: authentication, database, file hosting, app integrity checks, and usage analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase).
• Sentry: crash and error reporting.
• Expo: delivering push notifications to your device (it receives your push token and the notification text).
• Slack: our team's workspace, where the feedback and bug reports you send from the app are delivered to us.
• Apple and Google: if you choose to sign in with your Apple or Google account.

We do not otherwise share, rent, or sell your personal information to third parties.

Data storage and retention

Your data is stored on Google Cloud infrastructure and kept for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (see below), your profile, posts, reactions, follows, blocks, the notifications you triggered, the feedback you sent, your onboarding answers, and your push token are deleted from our production systems. Usage analytics are kept by Google Analytics for 14 months, then deleted automatically.

Your choices

• You can edit your profile at any time from within the app.
• You can delete any post you shared.
• You can turn off notifications and microphone access in your device settings.
• You can delete your account and its data at any time. See Delete your account.

Children's privacy

AlifPal is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
